Science Fair Resources #1
Parents,
Science Fair details and rubrics were sent home on Friday, October 2, 2020. Below is the letter sent home and the links to some very helpful resources. Happy Science Fair!!
5th and 6th Grade Teachers
5th/6th Grade 2020-21 Science Fair Project Ideas
This year’s Science Fair Projects must connect closely to the science standards and curriculum. The categories are underlined and some ideas are listed below. You are not limited to this list, but keep in mind that the project must be measurable by time, length, weight, or an observable trait that compares to something else. Engineering, computer science, and math are also areas of research. The top 3 individual and/or team winners (no more than 3 per team) of the HES Science will represent the school at the Wiregrass District Science Fair in January 2021. If they place there, they will be able to represent the school at the Greater East Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair (GEARSEF) in Auburn, AL (virtual fair) in March 2020. Choosing beginner level project is NOT recommended.
- HES Science Fair Date is December 4, 2020 and the project due date is November 30. An extra credit grade of 100 will be earned.
- Late projects will not be judged for the Wiregrass Fair due to submission deadlines.
- A tentative GEARSEF (Auburn) rubric is attached—Engineering and Science (2018--most current rubrics)
- A copy of the science fair guide can be emailed by the teacher and/or posted in Google Classroom.
- Groups are acceptable, with no more than 3 members. (Please keep scheduling and participation in mind. A child who does nothing will receive a grade that matches effort).
- Tri-fold presentation boards are to be used and bring the items used to display with the project.
- Journals (book, binder, or report-type papers) are recommended for documentation of steps, data, and results (they do not have to be perfect).
- I am glad to assist and am available by Bloomz, email, and conference if you’d like me to review projects through the process. My response will be based upon free time to respond/meet.

- Which Juice Can Best Save Your Berries from Mold—natural aloe juice and other juices to protect berries from mold
- An Experiment on Nitrogen Fertilizers--comparing plants grown with and without it
- A Study of Plant Population Density—exploring the effects of crowding on the growth and health of plants
- Plants Are On The Move! A Study of Gravitropism—stimulus/response relationship in plants and prove that plants can move up and down in response to gravity.
- Radiant Radish Seeds—How much radiation and heat can a seed handle? (oven, microwave, other sources)
- Can Water Plants Be Used to Determine Water Quality? *--Will duckweed grow better in different types of water?

Where is the rubric?
ReplyDeleteHi. That was oversight. I have posted both links in pdf format. Thanks for notifying me about the missing parts. They are also printed in the science fair packet that were sent home in October.
